Taiwanese Raids Stop Sales of Counterfeit Wii Products
At Nintendo s request, the Kaohsiung District Court issued warrants allowing
Taiwanese police to conducted raids today in Kaohsiung, southern part of Taiwan against various retailers offering counterfeit Wii game software, Wii modification
( mod ) chips and Wii console modification services in addition to game copiers for
Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite systems. Mass quantities of illegal products violating Nintendo s copyrights and trademarks were seized by the police officers from the special division of Intellectual Property Rights Police Team, curtailing the further distribution of the goods within the metropolitan area.
The Wii mod chips are semiconductor chips designed to circumvent the copy protection security system and allow the play of pirated Wii game software, or illegal copies of Nintendo games, downloaded from the Internet. A few examples of Wii mod chips are: D2 Sun, Wii Key, Wasabi, D2C, and D2Pro. The game copiers for
Nintendo DS or DS Lite are devices designed specifically to circumvent the technical protection measures implemented in the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite systems.
Game copiers enable users to copy, download and play counterfeit Nintendo DS
software on Nintendo DS or Nintendo DS Lite hardware. R4 , DS LINK , DS
Evolution , Super Card & Super Key and Ninja DS are just a few examples of game copiers.

actions taken by Taiwan s police against the distribution of counterfeit Nintendo products.

This action is one of several that Nintendo has taken globally against mod chips.
Piracy not only affects Nintendo, but also more than 100 global companies that independently create, license, market and sell Nintendo video game products.
Nintendo and these companies lost an estimated 5 million in sales due to counterfeits in 2007.
