The Return of CMOS
Today s digital imaging devices use semiconductor imaging sensors to capture images. Two sensor types are currently in use: CCD (charge-coupled device) and
CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor).
Although CMOS technology appeared on the scene first, CCD technology soon superseded it. Once initial problems were solved, CCDs offered better image quality and quickly became the technology of choice for digital video cameras, where quality concerns were paramount.
Sony took an early lead in the development of CCDs.
Today, Sony s unrivalled development capabilities continue to drive ongoing advances in sensor technologies.
